Coming
10/27 - 30th Annual Halloween R&B Spectacular
Dear blues fan:
On Tuesday August 29th 1977 harmonica legend James Cotton,
a 42 year old Mississippi native with long roots in
Memphis and Chicago, a protégé of
Sonny Boy Williamson II (patron saint of BCBS), and former
Muddy Waters sideman, gave BCBS instant credibility
by headlining the fledgling society’s first concert.
Six summers later on July 23rd 1983 the Annual R&B
Picnic,
the brainchild of BCBS co-founder Alex Hastie, came into
being as one of the blues world’s
most unique events. BCBS will celebrate those landmark
musical events at the 25th Annual R&B
Picnic, which moves to a new location, the historic Snipes
Farm in Morrisville, PA (directly
across Rt.1 from former site of the R&B Picnic).
The BCBS Board thanks the Trease and Patel
families for a great run of R&B Picnics and looks
forward to working with the Snipes family.
Our friend, the late, great Willie Dixon, performed for
a BCBS Fifth Anniversary event in 1982.
His statement, "The blues are the facts of life," reminded
the Board that sometimes change is as
necessary as it is inevitable. That being said, only
the site of the Picnic has changed. The tasty
food, the relaxed, friendly atmosphere, the high quality
music will be the same; however, Snipes
Farm is ten times larger than the previous location and
parents are duly advised to keep tabs on
their children. There is ample free parking, but car
pooling is greatly appreciated. Please bring
your own blankets, chairs, and other picnic supplies.
There will be two stages: the main stage and
a second stage on the patio of a barn, newly named "A.J.’s
Blue Thursday Stage." Snipes Farm
requests that you only bring cans and plastic bottles
onto the site. Snipes Farm can only be
entered from Route 1 South; for directions go to www.SnipesFarm.com
. Once again 1,000
patrons are needed to keep this special event viable.
The 25th Annual R&B Picnic, a 30th
Anniversary Event celebrating the world’s oldest
continuously active blues society - we told you
when, we’ll see you then!
Music is the magic,
Tom Cullen, for BCBS
